Why IMI: Our Mission

The Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI) is an exciting, new multi-disciplinary research and teaching hub located at the heart of the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). At IMI, we prepare the next generation of leaders, contribute to our communities, and solve problems through discovery, application and communication of knowledge in management, the social sciences, and sciences.


Our faculty are world-class scholars, teachers and writers of award-winning textbooks and cases. We offer professional graduate, undergraduate, and executive programs that are distinct in their innovations in design, pedagogy, and practice. They are rooted in academic rigour combined with a spirit of collaboration, encouraging and facilitating dialogue and exchange to equip global leaders for the high-velocity environment we live in the today.

We welcome students from over 34 countries to participate in our unique and world-leading undergraduate, graduate, and executive programs. Our students enjoy an environment that provides immersion in cutting-edge research and a supportive experience enriched by active student groups and opportunities to learn from academic and industry experts.

Experiential learning is central to IMI’s teaching philosophy, and all IMI programs leverage UTM’s location at the heart of Canada’s largest and most vibrant industrial and commercial regions to provide internships or co-op experiences designed to enrich students’ education. With its own in-house business accelerator ICUBE, students connect with expert entrepreneurs and try their hand at developing their own business ideas!

As a multi-disciplinary unit, IMI provides an important academic platform for fostering closer interactions and sharing of expertise and providing new means for a range of disciplines to work together. Our globally recognized faculty are engaged in seeking answers related to public health, fintech, social justice, diversity, innovation, education policy, ethics, and much more. Our research has had, and continues to have, far-reaching influence on managerial and policy decisions at the firm, industry, and various levels of government in Canada and globally. Our faculty’s research is regularly featured in major media outlets as we work hard to disseminate new knowledge and help community and business partners create solutions and technologies that advance business practices, policy, and technologies.

IMI takes pride in exemplary citizenship and social responsibility among our faculty, staff, alumni and students. IMI community initiatives include, the UTM People Power Challenge team, which aims to enhance the environmental and community literacy and engagement of the campus, successful United Way fund-raising activities like the Pink Luncheon and Dodge for the Cure, and the UTM chapter of Connections and Conversations, an affinity group of racialized UTM staff and their supporters aimed at creating an open and empowering environment for all members of the UTM community.
