Certificate in Investments, Analytics and Risk Management: successfully broaden the scope of your career

This certificate will combine accelerated learning with academic rigor and professional development. Participants will gain key knowledge in the areas of Investments, Financial Management and Risk Management through an enriched program that builds the foundation to pursue globally recognized designations (i.e. Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) and Financial Risk Management (FRM)). All modules will be complemented by case studies and applied lab-based material.

Upon completion of the program, participants will recieve access to two certification test banks of their choice. 

Online Modules and Learning Outcomes

Module 1: Investments I (Modern Investments and Practical Applications of Technology)

This module presents participants with an intensive, immersive program covering practical applications of technology in finance (e.g. Fintech), and its future from an inter-disciplinary perspective (i.e. strategy, computer science, trading, banking, insurance, investments, human resources, risk management, etc.). Participants will be shown a modern view of what will change and how to survive and excel in this disruptive period.

Module 2: Investments II (Private Equity and Entrepreneurial Finance)

The module will provide participants with skill sets so they can analyze and understand private equity from multiple perspectives: the perspective of the individual/firm seeking and receiving private equity finance; the perspective of the private equity fund; and, the perspective of the limited partners that provide finance for private equity funds. Participants will also learn how to build Leverage Buyout (LBO) models.

Module 3: Modelling in Financial Management with Descriptive & Predictive Analytics

In this module, participants will learn popular algorithms used in finance. The module will be conducted primarily through lab-based learning, simulations and tools from the UTM Finance Learning Centre. Various data-driven examples will be provided.

Module 4: Risk Management I (Frameworks and Categories of Risks)

This module studies risk management from a holistic perspective for various non-financial (e.g. utility, apparel retail) and financial (e.g. bank) companies. Various risk categories will be considered such as cyber risk, operational risk, market risk, energy risk, technology risk, financial risk, etc. Cases and frameworks will be integrated into the module.

Module 5: Risk Management II (Financial Derivatives and Measures of Risk)

This module focuses on how to use derivative securities to manage financial risks. It includes a discussion of why firms should hedge financial market risk, identification and quantification (modelling) of financial risks; the value-at-risk (VaR) and expected shortfall measures of risk; credit risk and capital allocation.

Otto Yung, MBA, MFin, CFA, CPA, CMA, P.Eng. is a seasoned professional with over 15 years of industry experience. He is currently an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). Courses taught include risk management and derivatives across all three U of T campuses.

Jon Aikman

Jon Aikman

Jon Aikman, MBA, CIM is a qualified lawyer. Jon was the CIO and Portfolio Manager for an alternative investment firm focused on alternative equity and private debt strategies. He sits on the investment committee of the endowment and pension fund of Victoria College at U of T. He teaches graduate and executive courses in the Master of Finance, MBA, Master of Management of Artificial Intelligence and Master of International Business programs.

In today’s challenging market conditions, companies often have a lower tolerance for ‘surprises’ and a greater need to manage risk holistically.
