Windows 11 and macOS upgrades
Whether you’re a Windows or Apple user, there’s an operating system upgrade headed your way soon. Here’s what you need to know to keep your device running in tip-top shape.
Windows 10 to Windows 11 upgrades
Why do I need to update my Windows 10 computer to Windows 11 now?
Windows 10 has reached its end of life. This means that Microsoft has stopped providing security updates and technical support for the operating system. To avoid security vulnerabilities, all UTM managed computer must be upgraded to Windows 11.
Over the past year, all new computers have shipped with Windows 11, and I&ITS has been applying Extended Security Updates (ESU) to managed Windows 10 computers to bridge the gap while upgrades are underway. That coverage expires in October 2026. All managed Windows 10 computers must be upgraded before then.
What action do I need to take on my Windows 10 computer, and what happens next?
- Submit a ticket through the I&ITS Service Portal to request an upgrade to Windows 11 on your Windows 10 computer.
- Upon receiving your ticket, an I&ITS team member will review and assess whether you’re eligible for an automated or manual upgrade.
- If your device requires a manual upgrade, I&ITS will visit your office, or you can arrange to drop off your computer at the UTM Service Desk.
- In most cases, the upgrade will run in the background on your device, and you’ll have full functionality of your computer during this time.
Upgrading to macOS Tahoe on Apple computers
If you have an Apple computer, you’ve probably been prompted a few times to upgrade your operating system from Sequoia to Tahoe.
While Sequoia will still work on your device, here’s why you should upgrade to Tahoe:

- Compatibility with the latest apps and software.

Upgrading to Tahoe takes roughly 1–2 hours, depending on connection speed and system performance. It’s a good idea to start the upgrade before you go for lunch or at the end of your workday to minimize disruption.
