Welcome to the Winter 2021 semester!
My wonderful ICCIT family,
Again, we start a new semester – online (did I just hear a mixed response of cheers and grumbles?). As students of digital technology we know more than most the strengths and challenges of media.
I wished us all well in my Fall 2020 message and I want to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you to every student who sat behind screens too far away from your classmates, friends, professors, and for some - families. Thank you for the effort you made, believing in yourselves enough to persevere. And thank you for learning much more than the course content: you are learning time management, self-care, hard-work, how to recover from stumbles, and how to be effective online. You INSPIRE me every day to do my best for YOU.
I also which to thank our ICCIT faculty, librarians, staff, and student mentors. We are asked to find a way to bring the passion we have for our subjects through liquid-crystal displays, over modems and routers, along airwaves, cable, and fibre – to our students. It is not easy. We have also learned a lot, and we are still learning but we will not rest until we find our best ways through. That is our commitment to you. Thank you to every professor, instructor, teaching assistant, academic advisor, student mentor, IT support staff, learning technology assistant, and everyone else supporting ICCIT. I am humbled by your efforts.
Today, as I listened to Poet Laureate, Ms. Amanda Gorman, recite the poem, “The Hill We Climb”, I was struck by her words.
“When day comes, we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never ending shade?
The loss we carry, a sea. We must wade..
For there was always light.
If only we're brave enough to see it.
If only we're brave enough to be it.”
I joined many other professors at U of T in a video-letter to our students – check it out here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjBNr4eOnlU. If you have questions about your program planning, email our academic advisors at ICCIT.Advising@utoronto.ca. For second year students, remember your ICCIT Student Mentors are ready and able to support you (and inject some fun and community too); check in with them at email@example.com.
To be your ICCIT Director is an honour and privilege. As we take on this semester together, students, faculty, librarians, staff - I want you to know that I see you. You are brave, you have us with you every step of the way - you’ve got this.
