Timo Schaefer is a historian of Latin America whose research focuses on politics, legal culture, and social movements in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Mexico. He is the author of Liberalism as Utopia: The Rise and Fall of Legal Rule in Post-Colonial Mexico, 1820-1900 (Cambridge University Press, 2017). The Latin American Studies Association awarded Liberalism as Utopia the 2018 Best Social-Sciences Book. Before coming to UTM, he will be a postdoctoral fellow in the international laboratory of knowledge “Visions of Peace: Transitions between Violence and Peace in Latin America” at the University of Guadalajara.
