Carolina Ruiz Austria is a PhD (S.J.D.) Candidate at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto. Her research areas are labor migration, sex work and feminist legal theory. Carol was the International Fellow on Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Rights at the Faculty of Law in 2007-2008 and wrote her LLM thesis on Secularism and the legal discourse of abortion in the Philippines. Before coming to Canada, she practiced law for many years in the Philippines as an NGO lawyer and worked with indigenous rights and environmental organizations as well as feminist legal advocacy organizations. She occasionally works as a consultant for international NGOs, particularly in the areas of women’s human rights, gender, sexual rights and reproductive health.
