Experiential Education in Buddhist Studies

Heather Thornton

The Khyentse Foundation has given support for Engaging Education in Buddhist Studies, a new initiative to be developed at the University of Toronto over the next two years. This initiative will support the development and delivery of new course modules that enhance student and teacher experiences of existing Buddhist studies courses by incorporating pedagogical practices of experiential learning, especially those that foster student well-being.

The known benefits of experiential education include increased engagement, self-confidence and compassion for participants, by combining this pedagogical approach with creative exercises, we aim to support overall wellness and health in our University community. Spearheaded by Profs. Frances Garrett and Sarah Richardson, and organized through the collaborative hub of the Ho Centre for Buddhist Studies at the University of Toronto, these enriched courses will impact undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto St. George Campus, as well as in the Departments of Historical Studies and Visual Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
