Congratulations to J. Barton Scott, winner of the 2018-19 UTM Annual Research Prize in the Humanities!

Professor Scott is a scholar of religion whose interdisciplinary research cuts across such fields as modern South Asian studies, comparative political theory, global secularisms, and print media studies. He is the author of Spiritual Despots: Modern Hinduism and the Genealogies of Self-Rule (University of Chicago, 2016) and the co-editor of Imagining the Public in Modern South Asia (Routledge, 2016), as well as numerous articles and essays. He is currently working on a book manuscript titled Slandering the Sacred: Law, Media, and Religious Affect in Colonial India
