2019 Summer - Women and Gender Studies: Topic Courses

WGS337H5F: Special Topics in Women and Gender Studies: Women in S.T.E.M (S. Abdulnour)

Although the percentage of Women has increased in many careers, including law and business, women continue to be underrepresented in fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This course will demonstrate different approaches to bridge the gap underlying gender disparity in STEM and study why few women pursue STEM education and careers. Students will examine the association between cognitive development and gender role from early childhood and through adolescence, as well as, discuss society, culture, and pervasive stereotypes that shape women's lives and their career choices.  Female guest speakers from STEM backgrounds (both in academic and industrial fields) will speak about their education, career, and personal experiences.
