RLG411H5F: Advanced Topics in Religion, Media, and Culture: Media and Religious Feelings (E. Escalon)
How does one come to feel religious? How and to what extent do media play a role in this process? This advanced undergraduate course seeks to help students answer these questions bu drawing on the methods and theories from material religion and studies of affect. In this course students will learn what makes a piece of media religious and how these religious media help make those who interact with them religious. Throughout the semester, students will develop a toolkit of analysis and will be encouraged to use these tools to analyze religious media in and outside of the classroom. Topics covered by this course include images, texts, soundscapes, film, television, relics, food & drink, and futuristic media.
