DTS401H5SAdvanced Topics in Diaspora and Transnational Studies: Parenting and Child Socialization within Diasporic Communities (H. Ganapathy-Coleman)

What deeply held beliefs guide immigrant parents trying to make a life in a new country? How do their ideas about child rearing change as a result of the move? What ideas about children, childhood and parenting remain unchanged despite the pressures of assimilation/integration? This course will draw on literature from anthropology, psychology and history to examine answers to these questions by studying the challenges and advantages that diaspora parents (especially but not exclusively South Asian) negotiate in different parts of the world. It will also attend to thevarious ways in which the children interpret their parents' beliefs and strategies and respond to them.
