Fall Counselling Groups

Groups are powerful vehicles for change. When we participate in a group with others who are living with similar concerns, we begin to realize that we are not alone in our struggles. We explore and learn new skills, practicing these in the safety of the group. Groups can be an empowering experience; feeling the support of the facilitator(s) and fellow group members can increase our motivation and energy to create the change we want for ourselves.

Please check out the groups outlined below and choose one that you believe is a good fit for you:

Coping with Social Anxiety

  • Facilitator: Heather Burns-Shillington
  • When: Tuesdays, 2:30pm - 3:30pm
  • October 16th to December 4th

Some people feel so anxious in social settings that they avoid these situations all together. This is called social anxiety. At UTM, this might look like not going to class, missing orientation and social events and struggling to talk to professors and other students on campus. This 8-week group for students with social anxiety will teach CBT strategies and provide a safe space for students to practice these strategies, with the hope that by the end, participants feel fewer symptoms and feel more confident approaching social situations.

Challenging Negative Thinking

  • Facilitator: Madeline Keogh
  • When: Tuesdays, 10:00am - 11:15am
  • October 16th to November 27th

This 6 week group is open to students who are struggling with negative thinking and the impact it is having on their life, their expectations for their life, and their sense of themselves. The group will help students to challenge unhealthy thinking patterns and develop more positive inner dialogues.

FEAR-LESS: A Journey through Managing Anxiety

  • Facilitator: Richard Lindo
  • When: Tuesdays, 3:00pm - 4:30pm
  • October 16th to November 27th

This group has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience.

FEAR-LESS is a psychoeducational/experiential group aimed at identifying unhelpful thoughts and behaviours linked to anxiety, and replacing them with healthier, more adaptive thoughts and behaviours. This group will also examine roadblocks to consistently implementing healthier and adaptive patterns. The main objective is to help students develop tools to manage their symptoms of anxiety more effectively across situations.

Becoming Resilient in University

  • Facilitator: Cristina Domingues
  • When: Thursdays, 1:00pm - 2:00pm
  • TBD

This is a 4-part weekly workshop series that will be offered each month to UTM students. This series offers an introduction to understanding stress; its benefits and challenges; the skills and supports needed to cope well in university; and develop long-term resilience (the ability to bounce back from overwhelming forms of stress). Each session will be 60 minutes in length, and is intended for 10-12 students per month.
