Black, Indigenous, and Racialized Graduate Research Fellowship

These annual awards, co-sponsored by the Vice-Dean, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs and UTM Principal are intended to recognize excellence in research and scholarly performance by a U of T Mississauga Black, Indigenous, or racialized graduate student. Award can be worth up to $8,000.  Recipients will receive $6,000 as a research stipend plus up to $2,000 that can be allocated to eligible research expenses.

Student Eligibility

Eligible nominees include any Black, Indigenous, or racialized currently enrolled graduate student (in any professional graduate program or research-stream graduate program) who is identified in ROSI as a U of T Mississauga student and who pays U of T Mississauga student fees. (To be appropriately identified in ROSI, students need to complete and submit the SGS Affiliation Form.)

Award Criteria

Excellence will be evaluated in terms of  impact through scholarly achievement, involvement with underrepresented communities, contributions to their field of study, communication of research results, and mastery of their subject area.

Nominations

Students can self-nominate with supporting signature from their advisor.  A nomination dossier will generally include:

(1) A covering letter from the student’s advisor, no longer than two pages in length, summarizing and explaining the documentation, and drawing attention to the most significant points brought forward in favour of the candidate; and

(2) A report or dossier outlining the nominee's contributions in and accomplishments in scholarly achievement and research, including at least two letters of support for the nomination from students, faculty, community organization, staff or alumni. The nomination letter must include contact information of the nominator.

(3) A two-page research proposal that outlines the research work that the student plans to engage in using the research component of the award.

Deadline

All components of the nomination (nomination letter, letters of support, etc.) must be submitted together. Deadline: Friday, April 7, 2023

Adjudication Committee

The adjudication committee will be chaired by the Vice-Dean, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs or designate, and will include: Two U of T Mississauga graduate students; Three U of T Mississauga faculty selected by the Vice-Dean, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs, one from the Sciences, one from the Social Sciences, and one from the Humanities; and one representative from the UTM Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Office. In the event of a split decision in the committee, the Chair’s vote will break the tie.
