MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO MISSISSAUGA ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE of Erindale College Council meeting held on Monday, November 23, 2009 at 1:10 p.m. in Room 3129, South Building.

1. Minutes of the previous meeting (October 26, 2009)

The report of the last meeting was approved.

2. Reports of Committees and Officers

a) 2010-11 Curriculum Reports: Items for Approval
i. Humanities - Prof. Leslie Thomson

The Humanities Curriculum Report is attached hereto as Appendix A.
Professor Thomson noted that there were no substantive changes in the Humanities curriculum report and moved the following motion:

It was duly moved and seconded,
THAT the Academic Affairs Committee approve the Humanities 2010-11 Curriculum changes. (L. Thomson/G. Crawford)

The Chair opened the floor.

In response to a member's question about why there were so many course changes in French, Professors Thomson and Nikiema explained that there were not 17 distinct deleted courses and 12 new course additions as replacements, but rather that the changes represented designation changes. All FRE culture courses taught in English have become FRC designated or French Cultural Studies. Professor Nikiema explained that to alleviate confusion and inconsistencies within and across programs and to clearly distinguish the areas of study, three categories have been established as follows: FRC courses are for the Francophone studies stream, taught in English; FSL courses are for the functional French stream (FSL); and FRE courses are for the French studies stream (French).
Professor Thomson added that the English department added courses offered downtown to expand the department's repertoire.

The motion was called to question and was approved.

ii. Sciences - Prof. Peter Macdonald

The Sciences Curriculum Report is attached hereto as Appendix B.
Professor Macdonald noted that science curriculum changes were mainly housekeeping and updating in nature. He proposed the following motion.

It was duly moved and seconded,

The motion was approved.

iii. Social Sciences - Prof. Gary Crawford

The Social Sciences Curriculum Report is attached hereto as Appendix C.
Professor Crawford noted that the substantive changes in the Social Sciences report were two program deletions. He explained that the deletions of the Health Sciences Communications Major and the Human Communications and Technology Specialist resulted from the external review of the Communication, Culture and Information Technology program.
It was explained that the Health Sciences Communication Major (ERMAJ1095) has historically had low enrolment. Students generally have not been able to satisfy the minimal Science requirement to enter the program. The original intention of this major was as a feeder into the BioMedical Communication Master's program, but this has not been successful. With the planned transfer of the BioMedical Communications faculty to Biology from ICC it was felt that this program would no longer be viable. It is intended, however, that the existing HSC designated courses remain in the CCIT curriculum and be re-designated as CCT courses with re-numbering where appropriate. It is also envisaged that a module be developed in the planned Communications, Information and Media specialist program focused on the creation and use of Digital Media in Health Communication.

Furthermore, the Human Communication and Technology Specialist (ERSP1230) has historically had very low enrolments. Students interested in combining CCIT studies with Psychology have preferred to take a double major in CCIT and Psychology instead of the HCT specialist program. Further, given Psychology faculty resource constraints, it was felt that students would be more than adequately served through the current CCIT Psychology double major combined studies. It is also envisaged that a number of focused CCIT courses will be developed to ''bridge'' Psychology and CCIT specifically for the students who are majoring in CCIT and Psychology. Finally, the plan is to offer either a module or part of a module within the planned Communication, Information and Media specialist program that will encompass appropriate courses in Cognitive Psychology and the Psychology of Aging.

The motion was approved.
The committee then discussed at length the usefulness of the curriculum change template, which is used for both calendar change submission and governance purposes. Several problems were highlighted including, training of template users, the perceived lack of ease of use of the template and the incorrect classification of items between the three reports.

It was duly moved and seconded,
THAT the Office of the Registrar in conjunction with the Office of the Dean and the Governance office, review the curriculum template before the next curriculum review cycle (November 2010) and that the review group also include members consisting of template users. (T. Sanders/L. Thomson)

The Registrar agreed to give a progress report to members at the January AAC meeting.
The motion was called to question. The motion was carried.

The Chair announced that the next meeting was scheduled for Monday, January 18, 2010.
