Biography

Sultan Akif is an award-winning CEO of two social entrepreneurships, published author, tech professional and TEDx speaker who has traveled to and inspired people in over 75 countries. He was recently recognized in the Top 10 Global Changemakers list in Education by The Introducer Magazine.

Prior to becoming a social entrepreneur, Mr. Akif was a corporate executive for 17 years in various senior roles around the world for companies like Microsoft and IBM. He has now committed his life to empowerment of people as the CEO of Library in a Week organization and the founder of Experience Your Life Expo, which is one of the largest youth empowerment and employment events in Canada. He was honored to lead Experience Your Life to the National Finalist Round of Canada Volunteers Awards, and was invited to a special program by the Canadian Armed Forces to spend a full week on a Canadian base for youth influencers. 

With respect to UTM volunteerism, Mr. Akif has helped hundreds UTM students and graduates through mentoring and speaking at forums through UTM’s Institute for Management and Innovation (IMI).   His initiatives have received support from the Prime Minister, Commanding Officer of ‘O’ Division of RCMP, various MP’s and the Minister of Innovation.

Biography

Imre Gams graduated in 2012 with an HBA in History and English. Since graduating from UTM, he has worked at Apple in several leadership roles, tasked with everything from designing a countrywide iPhone launch strategy, to reshaping the corporate culture in Canada.

Mr. Gams no longer works in the corporate world and found his calling trading the financial markets. He is a partner of Scorpio Wealth – a consulting firm whose passion is to impart upon others the ability to manage and grow their wealth using active investment strategies. Mr. Gams is known in the trading industry as a highly effective performance coach, and works with the world’s premier Proprietary Trading Firm - Maverick Trading - to help train their traders and keep their performance at their best. Currently, he is authoring a book titled “The Millennial’s Guide to Survival”, a how-to book on achieving financial freedom and the elusive pursuit of happiness.

His engagement with UTM is extensive and includes mentorship activities, acting as a keynote speaker for Backpack to Briefcase events, and participation in Orientations, Show me the Green conferences, and the Alumni Café. This September he will participate in the Be Well Fair.

Biography

Mr. Vahed is currently serving on the UTM Alumni Association Board of Directors and holds a Vice-President role overseeing Established and Mature Alumni relations. Since graduating from UTM, he has been active in supporting and attending the various alumni initiatives on campus, such as the Extern ProgramBackpack to BriefcaseAlumni CafeShow me the Green judging event, 50th Anniversary Gala, and has been a presenter on the undergraduate student panel for the Department of Political Science. He was also a member of the Principal’s Advisory Group on Diversity and Excellence.  

Mr. Vahed has served as a staff member for both the UTM and St. George Campus.  

Mr. Vahed is the Manager, 21st Century Learning Unit, Incubation and Design Branch, Ministry of Education, where he helps develop innovative policies and programs that support the development of "future skills" and technology-enhanced learning for students, and has also introduced human-centred design to respond to persistent gaps and challenges in the education sector.

Mr. Vahed also serves on the Board of Directors for the Institute of Public Administration, Canada (Toronto Chapter) and is an alumnus of UTM. This is Mr. Vahed’s first term as a member of Campus Council.

Biography

Before joining Conservation Halton, Hassaan started his career as an evolutionary biologist at the University of Toronto, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology. He then completed a post-graduate degree in Science Communication from Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

During his 14 years at Conservation Halton, Hassaan has held a number of different positions, starting out as Communications Specialist, before becoming Director of Communications. He also served, for a short time, as acting Director of Lands, which provided him with a strong understanding of Conservation Halton operations. His interest in strategy then led him to become Director of Strategic Planning. In this role, Hassaan demonstrated his willingness to ask tough questions, his ability to address challenges and his commitment to strategic thinking. In 2016, Hassaan was named Interim General Manager, and spent one year in this role before his title as Chief Administrative Officer was made official. During this time, he has worked to influence positive cultural change, build a strong brand image and develop a new strategic plan, Metamorphosis. Today, he is focused on leading Conservation Halton through the implementation of the strategic plan.

Hassaan frequently speaks at conferences on branding, strategy and science communication. He also teaches Sustainability at the University of Toronto.

This is Mr. Basit’s first term as a member of Campus Council, with a term ending June 30, 2021.

Biography

Ms Petrelli is the Managing Director, Head of Equities, for UBS Securities in Canada and in her role is responsible for all equity product to Canadian clients for global platform and represents the country in UBS’ global equity franchise. Lisa oversees all risk management in the region, and is senior lead for operating and regulatory oversight with Canadian regulators.

Lisa is an active participant within the UBS community supporting and promoting gender initiatives. As advisory member of UBS’ All Bar None, and committee member of both Women in Equities, and UBS’ Diversity and Inclusion committee, Lisa supports dynamic programming and recruitment of women for the firm.  Lisa currently serves on the Global Advisory Board for 100 Women in Hedge Funds, and is a Director for the UBS Securities Canada Inc. Board.

Ms Petrelli has volunteered her time on UTM’s Council for the Li Koon Chun Finance Learning Centre. She holds a Master’s degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, is a graduate of the University of Toronto Mississauga, and has been a CFA Charter holder since 2000. Ms Petrelli will begin her first term as Campus Council member, term ending on June 30, 2019.

Ms Ivana Di Millo is an award-winning communications professional with 25 years of experience leading corporate communications in areas of internal and external communications, media relations, issues management, program promotion, and marketing in a both private and public sector organizations. Ms Di Millo is currently the Director of Communications at the City of Mississauga. In her role, Ivana championed the development and approval by Council of the City’s first Communications Master Plan, which was shared with over 60 municipalities.

Ms Di Millo graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from UTM in 1988 and has been a long time resident of Mississauga and has also served on the UTM Alumni Association and has received the UTM Arbor Award.  Ms Di Millo will begin her first term as Campus Council member, term ending on June 30, 2020.

Biography

Mr. Dario Di Censo has been volunteering at UTM in various capacities since 2004.  His many contributions to the University include serving on the UTM Alumni Association, Erindale College Council and the UTM Principal’s Advisory Council.  He has also been active in helping students by volunteering his time as a mentor and guest speaker.  Mr. Di Censo is the Chief Financial Officer of Armstrong Moving & Storage Ltd.  

Mr. Di Censo’s previous experience includes serving on the UTM Campus Affairs Committee since 2013.  Mr. Di Censo will begin his first term as Campus Council member, term ending on June 30, 2019. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from UTM in 1988.

Biography

Samra Zafar is a Commercial Account Manager - Toronto Business and Professional Services at RBC Royal Bank. She was previously an Associate with the ABL group at RBC Capital Markets.

Samra is a multiple award winning graduate of the University of Toronto, a Public Speaker, an upcoming Author, and the Founder of Brave Beginnings, an organization dedicated to helping women find personalized mentorship, friendship and support to rebuild their lives after oppression and abuse. After overcoming severe challenges and adversity, Samra went on to graduate with a Master's Degree in Economics from the University of Toronto and receive over a dozen awards and scholarships. She was the first mature student and woman of colour to win the John Moss Award, a $16,650 scholarship awarded annually to only one student from all three U of T campuses. She was awarded the Mother of the Year Award and was the recipient of the Spotlight Award by the Canada Pakistan Professionals Association and the Woman of Courage Award for being a community icon. Samra is very involved in the community and is an active board member of Interim Place, the largest shelter for abused women and children in the Peel Region.

Samra has appeared in several articles and TV interviews where she promotes education and empowerment, especially amongst women. She speaks at various events in GTA and was a recent speaker for the Couchiching Institute of Public Affairs and the International Women’s Day Conference by Amnesty International. She was also recently featured as the cover story in Generation Next magazine. Samra is currently in her first term as an alumni member of the Governing Council and a member of the UTM Campus Council.

Biography

For the last 14 years, Jay has been a partner with Gera & Nirula Professional Corporation, a Chartered Professional Accountant Firm in Vaughan, Ontario. Jay earned his B. Comm. from University of Toronto in 1983, his CPA, CA designation with Ernst & Young in 1989, and his MBA from University of Phoenix in 2014. Jay continues his professional development through various professional development courses at CPA Ontario, York University, Kellogg School of Business, and other such organizations. His professional experience includes investment banking, transportation, manufacturing, corporate travel, leisure travel, and public accounting. In November 2017, Jay was awarded the profession's highest mark of distinction, the Fellows (FCPA) designation by CPA Ontario.

Jay volunteers for various organizations, such as, University of Toronto (UTM Campus Council and Rotman School of Business), Huron College at University of Western Ontario (guest lecturer), Professional Conduct Committee member at CPA Ontario, and Aim for Seva Canada, which raises funds to build schools and hostels for underprivileged children in India. In the past Jay has served on various not for profit boards, such as The Community Foundation of Oakville, has mentored students at high school, college, and university levels, and volunteered extensively for organizations, such as The Cancer Society, The Red Cross, and Junior Achievement.
