ABOUT ME

Education

  • MA Candidate – University of Toronto Mississauga
  • Honours Bachelor of Science, Geography and Environmental Management – University of Toronto Mississauga

Research and Professional Interests

My research interests involve chronic diseases (particularly diabetes and prediabetes) in high-risk groups, including South Asians, Hispanics, Africans, Chinese and Aboriginals. My Master’s thesis aims to focus specifically on South Asians as they experience higher incidence of diabetes relative to other high-risk ethnicities. A considerable majority of the immigrant population coming to Canada also comprises of South Asians, so it is important to understand how they seek diabetes-related care in the Canadian healthcare system, manage prediabetes and diabetes conditions, and how the interventions available to them can be further improved for early detection and treatment. I hope to use a qualitative approach to carry out my research (through a scoping review and semi-structured interviews) and gain a detailed understanding on this topic.

Why Geography at UTM?

I chose UTM for my graduate studies because of the amazing geography department, wonderful professors, generous financial support, and an incredible supervisor (Dr. Kuuire) who is always encouraging his students to push beyond their limits and achieve new levels of academic excellence! Plus, the UTM campus has state-of-the art facilities, it’s beautiful, welcoming and feels like a second home!
