Dr. Susanne Soederberg is a Professor of Global Political Economy in the Department of Global Development Studies at Queen’s University in Canada. Susanne was a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2, Emerging Scholar, 2004-2014) and the Jane and Aatos Visting Professor on Contemporary Social Issues (2015-2016) at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies. Dr Soederberg’s areas of interests cover a wide variety of themes across financial geographies (public and private debt) and inter-scalar governance, especially along the global north/global south axis. She is author of several books including two award-winning books: Corporate Power and Ownership in Contemporary Capitalism (2010) and Debtfare States and the Poverty Industry: Money, Discipline and the Surplus Population (2014 open access). Her most recent book is Urban Displacements: Governing Surplus and Survival in Global Capitalism (2021) provides an exploration of debt, evictions and homelessness as it relates to rental housing in Berlin, Dublin and Vienna. She is currently working on financial geographies of infrastructure and displacements in varies spaces ranging from Manila to Berlin.
