Research and Professional Interests

Phuong Dao is currently a PhD candidate in physical geography with a collaborative specialization in Environmental Studies in the School of the Environment, University of Toronto. He is working on a grassland drought project in the Remote Sensing and Spatial Ecosystem Modeling laboratory (the RSSEM Lab), under the supervision of Prof. Yuhong He. His PhD project focuses on investigating changes in grassland biophysical and biochemical properties, including leaf pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence, water, leaf area index, and biomass under drought stress by means of the integration of ground-based and airborne hyperspectral remote sensing, chemical experiments, and modelling. He also earned a Master of Science degree in Remote Sensing Science and Technology from the National Central University in Taiwan in 2015 and a Bachelor of Engineering in Surveying Engineering from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology in Vietnam in 2011.

Why Geography at UTM?

I chose UTM mainly because my research direction aligns well with my supervisor, Dr. Yuhong He. We have great support from other students in our research groups, with solid backgrounds in ecology, remote sensing and GIS, and wholehearted support from Professor He. Our laboratory is well-equipped to meeting practically every need of my research. The support from other faculty and the great graduate community at UTM is another feature that attracted me. In addition, the beauty of the campus, which is surrounded by forest and quiet environments, is also a great place for research.
