Advanced Placement (AP)

This document indicates how transfer credit is awarded for Advanced Placement (AP) examinations. Please note that the following rules and regulations only apply to students admitted to a degree program and who are registered at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) during the 2019/20 academic year. 

1 A maximum of 3.0 full credits may be granted provided a grade of at least 4 is achieved in each AP exam.
2 In order to receive credit, final official results must be sent directly from the College Board to Enrolment Services by no later than July 19, 2019. Details on how to request your AP scores can be found at The school code for the University of Toronto is 0982. Results issued by your school are not acceptable. Enrolment Services

3 If you have taken more than one exam in the same discipline, only 1.0 full credit will be given as students are not permitted to apply more than one first year credit in the same discipline towards their degree. For example, if you have taken AP World History and AP European History, you will receive one HIS credit only.

You may forfeit your assessed secondary school transfer credits by September 18, 2019 by sending an email to the Transfer Credit Team at the Office of the Registrar ( using your U of T email address. Please include the following information:

  • Subject line: "Secondary School Transfer Credit Forfeit Request"
  • Body: Include your student number and the following statement – "This email is to confirm that I would like to forfeit the below secondary school transfer credit(s): [insert transfer credit here] "

The option to forfeit is only available to students who have not attended another post-secondary institution. Once forfeited, transfer credits cannot be reinstated.

5 If you choose to forfeit transfer credit given for a course for which you were awarded two half credits, you must forfeit both half credits.

Terms Defined

Exclusion: U of T courses in which you may not enrol unless you forfeit the transfer credit. In addition, you may not enrol in any courses that are listed in the UTM Calendar as exclusions for these courses or the transfer credit courses. If you enrol in any of these courses, the course will be listed as "extra" on your transcript and will not count towards your degree.

Unspecified transfer credit: A course that has no exact equivalency in the Faculty. For example, CHM1**Y represents an unspecified first year credit in Chemistry. Unspecified credits may be used to meet prerequisite, program or breadth requirements as long as permission is obtained from the relevant Program Advisor or the Office of the Registrar.

Generic transfer credit: A course for which no equivalent discipline exists. For example, HUM – Humanities, LNG – Language, SCI – Science, SSC – Social Science.

Distribution Requirements: To qualify for a degree, students must complete at least 1.0 credit from each of the following divisions: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences. Distribution requirements are noted for each course (where applicable) with the following codes:

  • HUM = Humanities
  • SSc = Social Sciences
  • SCI = Sciences

Subjects not listed above may still be considered for transfer credit. The University of Toronto Mississauga reserves the right to change transfer credit policies without notice.
