Interview with Shawn Foo
H.BSc. Chemistry Major, Forensic Science Minor, 2013
Shawn completed a 5-month semester at UTM taking forensic science courses as part of his NUS Forensic Science minor. Shawn applied to the exchange program, underwent an interview process, and was one of two successful applicants for his year. His career aspirations include working as a forensic scientist in a crime lab, doing casework as well as research.
Joining the local students in UTM, I took up five courses, of which three are in the forensic science programme. I participated in the classes and as well as optional, out-of-class learning sessions such as the night photography class and the Toronto Police (Forensic Identification Services) tour conducted by the Professor for FSc300, Wade Knaap. I was also lucky enough to join a few of my classmates for a controlled house burning event by the Ontario Fire Marshals at Midhurst. I also took part in many activities organized by the Forensic Science Society "IVNVI". It was all great fun!
There are little opportunities for forensic science learning and training in Singapore, due to how small we are as a country, and the number of serious crime we have. The burning passion for forensic science that an individual [has] can be easily smothered in Singapore - there are too few places you can expose yourself to the field...Thus, this international experience was extremely satisfying and fulfilling to me, because it allowed me to network extensively with people of similar passions for forensic science. It had also provided me with many opportunities to interact with professional forensic specialists/consultants, people who can easily reignite your flame of passion for this particular field with their experience and stories from real-life case work.
- I learnt a lot from the course work, which enriched my mind and sharpened my critical thinking skills. All [this] information, skills, and knowledge would certainly be valuable for my future career in this field.
- I took much away from this student exchange programme, learning much more than I can ever do in Singapore itself. In addition, I made many awesome friends, whom I believe I would surely be seeing them frequently in the course of my work, soon in the future. If you have a similar opportunity, grab it! I guarantee you it'll be an amazing learning adventure for you, as it was for me.
