UTM pays tribute to outgoing mayor with theatrical production

U of T Mississauga celebrated the legacy of Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion with a musical play that chronicles her life from her youth in Gaspé, Quebec through to her remarkable political career. The original play, “She Shoots! She Scores!”, was commissioned to honour the mayor as she prepares to retire after nearly five decades in municipal and regional politics.

The University of Toronto Mississauga, as a part of the Stantec Team, has been selected by an interagency scientific review panel to lead a long-term scientific study of the Arctic marine ecosystem along the Beaufort Sea shelf from Barrow, Alaska to the Mackenzie River delta in Canadian waters.

UTM launches new Professional Accounting Centre

The accounting profession has been undergoing dramatic change as a result of trends such as globalization, heightened investor expectations and increasing litigation. Now, a new centre at U of T Mississauga will be able to unpack their ramifications, and help sustain the relevance and resiliency of the profession.

Assistant economics professor Rahul Deb has won a Polanyi Prizes for his work in economics. Deb developed a theory that will allow market regulators to assess competition or collusion by observing a firm’s strategic behaviour over time

Professor Shafique Virani has been awarded the 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Academy of Religion. Virani is a Distinguished Professor of Islamic studies, director of the Centre for South Asian Civilizations, and past chair of the Historical Studies department at UTM. McMaster University awarded an honourary degree to former UTM principal Bob McNutt. McNutt was a geology professor, former dean of science and faculty member at McMaster for 30 years. After retiring, he served a number of acting roles at McMaster.

Principal’s Awards celebrate faculty and staff service. Professor Deep Saini, vice-president of U of T and principal of U of T Mississauga, joined students and colleagues in celebrating staff and faculty recipients for their contributions to teaching, research and staff service at the university. Call for nominations for the Advisory Committee on the Appointment of a Vice-President and Principal, University of Toronto Mississauga

The Office of the Vice-President and Provost is seeking nominations of individuals to serve on the committee that will advise on the appointment of a Vice-President and Principal at UTM. On June 30, 2015 Professor Hargurdeep (Deep) Saini will be completing his first term as Vice-President and Principal, University of Toronto Mississauga. Professor Saini is eligible for reappointment.

Calling All Cooks!

UTM Student newspaper The Medium is looking for culinary contributions from staff or faculty for “Blackboard Special”, a new column on home cooking. Contributors are asked to share a favourite recipe (as simple or as fancy as they like) and explain in a sentence or two why it has earned a special place in your culinary repertoire. Master of Biotechnology researcher and lecturer Jayson Parker was interviewed by CBC’s The National for a story related to the IMI-hosted conference on Wireless and Wearable Health Technology. The story is to air in mid-December.
