Services of the EEU

The Experiential Education Unit provides direct support to Academic Internships, Community Engaged Learning Courses (CEL), and the Research Opportunity Program (ROP) – “the big three”.  We aim to help faculty members incorporate the "big three" experiential learning courses into their curriculum as seamlessly as possible.

Academic Internship Courses

For new Academic Internship courses or where the Course Director is new, the EEU provides full-support for a period of 2 years, this includes but is not limited to:

  1. Student placement
  2. Student counselling
  3. Employer identification and recruitment
  4. Student Insurance
  5. Assistance with course syllabi development
  6. Promotion

Community Engaged Learning Courses

For new CEL courses or where the Course Director is new, the EEU provides full-support for a period of 2 years, this includes but is not limited to:

  1. Course syllabi development is done in partnership with the Centre for Community Partnerships on the St. George Campus
  2. Promotion
  3. Student Insurance
  4. Employer identification and recruitment

Research Opportunity Program

For ROP courses, we provide ongoing full-support which includes but is not limited to:

  1. Counselling students and faculty
  2. Assistance with the ROPAPP
  3. Distribution of ROP dates/deadlines
  4. Promotion
  5. Samples of previously approved projects
  6. Funding requests

Additional Assistance

  1. Provides assistance to departments looking to hold outreach activities and events both on and off campus in and with the community
  2. Provides advice to students, faculty and staff on various issues surrounding the courses we support as well as where to go to find additional information or non-academic experiences
  3. Attends events and speaks to various audiences to promote what the EEU does and all of the wonderful academic experiences and opportunities we have at UTM
  4. Assists departments in the formation of experiential learning courses or how to integrate these experiences into existing courses
  5. Provides guidance and assistance to departments with their additional experiential learning opportunities in the form of policy distribution, information, insurance, etc.
  6. Reaches out to existing and new community partners to build/form relationships
  7. Reaches out to departments looking to create new opportunities – large group meetings and one-on-one
  8. Works with the community to identify needs that the university can help fulfill
  9. Helps to promote your academic experiential opportunities through our existing networks as well as through our various social media accounts
  10. Works with various other units on campus to help bridge both the academic and non-academic experiences to ensure that students are able to get the best of both worlds
