Talk-Back at Theatre Erindale

[Mississauga ON, March 2015] Mary Vingoe, author of LIVING CURIOSITIES, will attend Theatre Erindale’s World Première production of the new version of her play on Friday March 20th. The show marks the end of the company’s 2014-2015 “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” Season. In the late afternoon that day, Vingoe will offer a free Play Reading at the Erindale Studio Theatre; she will also take part in a Talk Back with the Cast following the evening performance.
Playwright Mary Vingoe
The University of Toronto Mississauga Department of English and Drama and the Sheridan College Department of Visual and Performing Arts have collaborated to bring Ms. Vingoe to town from her home base in Nova Scotia. Mary is past Artistic Director of the Magnetic North Theatre Festival at Canada’s National Arts Centre in Ottawa. She is a co-founder and past Artistic Director of Toronto’s feminist Nightwood Theatre, a co-founder and past co-Artistic Director of Ship’s Co. Theatre in Parrsboro, and founding Artistic Director of The Eastern Front Theatre in Halifax.

Her play Living Curiosities, based on the story of the 19th century giantess, Anna Swan, is published by Playwrights Canada Press, and copies will be available during the run. A previous version of the play was mounted by Ship’s Co. in Nova Scotia. When this new version was first published, Glenn Sumi of NOW Magazine called it "A fine Canadian play that hasn't yet been staged in Toronto.... Love to see a local company tackle this highly theatrical work!" Theatre Erindale accepted the challenge.

Mary's new play Refuge, about the tragic suicide of a refugee claimant to Canada, premiered at Eastern Front Theatre in 2013, and will be produced by Nightwood Theatre in Toronto in April 2016 and published by Scirocco Press. In 2009 she was awarded the Portia White Prize, Nova Scotia's highest award for artistic excellence. In 2011 she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

From 4:00PM to 5:30 PM on Friday March 20th in the Erindale Studio Theatre, Vingoe will read from Refuge and her latest new work, as well as shedding some light on the origins of Living Curiosities. This event is open to the public and free of charge.

Following the 8:00PM performance of Living Curiosities (tickets $12-18), she and the Cast will engage in a Talk-Back with the audience to discuss the play and production.

The show runs March 12-14 and 19-22 at the Erindale Studio Theatre on the UTM campus, with evening performances Thursday through Saturday and matinées on Saturdays and on Sunday March 22. Single tickets are $12 or $18; Parking in Lot 1 or the CCT Garage is $6.00, and Mississauga Transit Routes 44 and 110 will take you to BUT NOT INTO the campus during the Teaching Assistant Strike.
