Announcing Theatre Erindale for 2014-15: “Lovers in a Dangerous Time”

[MISSISSAUGA ON, June 2014] Theatre Erindale has announced an innovative new season for 2014-2015. The theme this year is “Lovers in a Dangerous Time”. Every one of the mainstage productions will feature lovers – broadly interpreted! – against a backdrop of imminent danger: from the swordfights of Renaissance Italy to the heat and hormones of Kansas to the race riots of New York City in the midst of the Civil War.

The company is going for a lot of ‘firsts’. In October, get ready for The Capulets and the Montagues. When Lope de Vega, greatest master of the Spanish Golden Age, tackled the same sources at the same time as Shakespeare, he came up with a comedy with a happy ending in which (almost!) everyone survives! You've never seen a Romeo or Juliet like this before – don’t miss it!

Next, the 1915 shooting of a man-about-town by his maid sets off a chain of reactions in Toronto society. Charlotte Gray has given special permission for the third-year company under Meredith Scott to adapt her latest sensational bestseller, The Massey Murder, for the stage.

Then in January, a dashing drifter, a beautiful girl, and the last day of summer make a potent combination that will change the lives of two other men and four other women forever. William Inge’s 1953 American classic Picnic is a sexy and frequently funny drama of youthful dreams.

The second off-beat version of Romeo & Juliet in one season comes in February with David Matheson’s one-act Occupy Verona, inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement. And the other half of this exciting Shakespeare double bill is an original take on Troilus & Cressida titled Alms for O.

The season closes in March with the Ontario première of another true story. Mary Vingoe’s highly theatrical Living Curiosities, or What You Will is the extraordinary tale of Nova Scotia giantess Anna Swan. Sent to New York in wartime to be exhibited in P. T. Barnum’s American Museum, leading a rebellion of ‘freaks’ is the last thing on her mind. But fate and Shakespeare have a way of illuminating unexpected paths.

Grads of the Sheridan-UTM Theatre and Drama Studies Program are starring on CBC and at Second City and Soulpepper, running theatre companies across the country, writing award-winning plays, and mentoring the next generation of young performers. All Theatre Erindale mainstage productions are mounted at the Erindale Studio Theatre on the campus of the University of Toronto Mississauga. Great news for patrons: the first phase of the construction next door to the theatre will be complete by Fall, and the driveway for passenger drop-off and ticket pick-up will be open again!

Theatre Erindale is the best entertainment buy in Mississauga. Season Memberships for the 2014-2015 “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” season will go on sale in August at $48 for Students and Seniors and $72 for Regular Adults. That’s five shows for the price of four, and includes FREE admission to the Beck Festival of one-act plays in December at the MiST. Performances run Thursday to Sunday; single tickets are $12 and $18. The campus is well served by transit, and evening and weekend parking is available for $6.
