Traditional Land Acknowledgement

UTM Tipi

The Ceremonials Committee has approved a revised Statement on Acknowledgement of Traditional Land. The revised Statement, which was reported for information to the Academic Board at its meeting on April 28, 2021, is as follows:

I (we) wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.

The revisions to the Statement were made further to a recommendation from the Director, Office of Indigenous Initiatives, and reflects feedback that was provided by the Mississaugas of the Credit.

The Statement is applicable to all three campuses – UTM, UTSC, and St. George – as well as the Koffler Scientific Reserve at Jokers Hill and the Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS).

Questions concerning the use of the Statement should be directed to Melissa Deleary, Special Projects Officer, Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

Please share this memorandum with faculty and staff as appropriate.
