Turning Research into Action: Interdisciplinary Workshop on Child and Youth Mental Health

On January 29, 2026, the CCDMP hosted an interdisciplinary workshop, Turning Research into Action. The workshop was designed for U of T graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and focused on knowledge translation in interdisciplinary research on child and youth mental health. This workshop supported attendees’ policy-relevant capacity building by strengthening their abilities to translate evidence into accessible, actionable formats.

Objectives of the Workshop

Objectives included:

  1. Developing KT and science communication skills,
  2. Fostering interdisciplinary dialogue across research areas, and
  3. Supporting professional development through focused skill-building activities

Workshop Activities

Dr. Ruth Speidel gave an overview of knowledge translation frameworks and their role in the research process. Attendees then engaged in mini, hands-on skill-building stations exploring different KT approaches (e.g., arts-based methods, improv, infographics), led by CCDMP team members, Dr. Ruth Speidel, Dr. Jennifer Phillips, and Chanel Tsang. The workshop also included time for networking and discussion, contributing to a growing community of practice in evidence-informed policy engagement.

“I absolutely loved how engaging each station was through the use of interactive activities. It really helped the content and messages come across clearly and helped me grow in my KT skills. Thank you for hosting and I hope to attend future ones!”
