Q: Briefly describe your current position and responsibilities, including challenges/rewards. How did you go about your job search upon graduating -- what strategies were most successful and why do you think you were hired?

I chose my study program late in my career. I have been a Purchasing Professional for 30 years. I am currently the Manager of Procurement for the City of Mississauga where I have 20 staff whom I mentor on a regular basis. I am also certified in procurement (public and private). I have worked in both the private and private sectors. I have been a Board Member of several professional organizations, a writer and a volunteer speaker many times. I have also spoken professionally many times. Purchasing is a challenging field in all areas of commerce. It requires many skills but the ability to think, analyze and communicate clearly are two of the most critical abilities. My program of study was immensely beneficial.

Q: What personal characteristics/skills are most important for success in your job/field?

Critical and conceptual thinking, communicating, organizing, negotiating and analysing.

Q: What have been the keys to your success? What advice would you give to students who wish to pursue a similar career path? If you had the chance to plan your studies and your career path again, what would you do differently (if anything)?

My degree was the most helpful in my career and my life skills. I would never stop going to school.
