2023 Summer NSERC USRA
Applications for Summer 2023 are available. The tentative deadline is March 13, 11:59PM..

The duration of the USRA is 16 weeks, and the value is at least $7,500 ($6K from NSERC + minimum $1,500 from the supervisor).

Remote work is acceptable with supervision expected on a frequent basis.

Award holders are not required to be registered during their work term.

Applicants must have completed a minimum of two terms at the time of application and by the start of the USRA term in May.

Applicants must secure a supervisor in Biology.

Awards made to self-identified black and Indigenous students will be in addition to the department's quota. Please contact stephanie.dorego@utoronto.ca if you are in this group, even if you cannot find a supervisor, she will assist with finding a supervisor.

Students complete Form 202 Part I

Students must upload a PDF copy of the academic history report/e-transcript/official paper transcript on NSERC’s online system when completing their application.

Forward their reference number to their supervisor. This number is automatically generated when Form 202 Part I is completed.

Supervisor completes Form 202 Part II

Student: submit an e-copy of their official transcript to stephanie.dorego@utoronto.ca
Student and supervisor must sign the Student-Supervisor Certification Form and email a copy to stephanie.dorego@utoronto.ca.
Student Eligibility:

Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

Registered either full-time or part-time (at the time of application) in a bachelor's degree program in at least one of the two terms immediately before holding the award. NSERC, however, expects that full-time students will hold most awards.

First year students are not eligible

Students who will graduate a the end of the term before the USRA begins, is eligible as long as they have not started a graduate program before the USRA is finished.

USRA award holders are permitted to take up to two courses during the duration of the award (not required)

Thesis or ROP courses are not permitted

University of Toronto Excellence Awards (UTEA)
This award aims to provide undergraduate students with funding to conduct a summer research project under an eligible faculty member's supervision. There are 10 UTEA awards available across the entire UTM. Please refer to the program guidelines link
Please note the following:

Applications are closed for Summer 2022. Check here in March 2023 for next Summer.

Students do not need to be Canadian citizens or permanent residents to hold a UTEA, this is different than the NSERC USRA in which only Canadian/permanent residents are eligible.

The supervisor of a UTEA-NSE recipient must be a faculty member holding a NSERC grant administered through UTM, either as the principal investigator or the co-investigator.
