Rachel Stubits

UTM Biology undergrad presents at the International Astronautical Congress in Washington, DC this October

#MondayMotivation

"My name is Rachel Stubits and I am a third-year undergraduate Molecular Biology student at the University of Toronto Mississauga. For the past year, I have been working with three students (Anisha Hundal, Claire Velikonja, and Wendy Wang) on a protocol for a scoping review investigating the effects of microgravity on dental caries. Dental caries, more commonly known as tooth decay, is one of the most common diseases in humans; it affects more than 97% of the global population during their lifetimes. Additionally, it seems to affect astronauts more often than the general population. Along with my team, I am attending the 70th International Astronautical Congress in Washington, DC on October 22nd, 2019 to present our protocol (plan of action) for the first literature review on the relationship between microgravity and dental caries. I would like to acknowledge the assistance provide by Joanna Szurmak (UTM librarian) and the funding provided by the Canadian Space Agency."

"...many of the skills underlying Rachel' success have been emphasized by Dr. Fiona Rawle in her teachings. Among many, I would like to highlight literacy. Dr. Rawle also supported Rachel as an ROP student where she gained many skills. I think Rachel’s success reflects on the quality of education by individuals such as Dr. Rawle and should be celebrated."  said Dr. Jade Atallah.

Anisha Hundal is a third year Molecular Biology Specialist undergrad student. Claire Velikonja is a third year Chemical Engineering undergrad at U of T. Wendy Wang has obtained her HBSc from U of T in 2018 in Global Health, Immunology and is now second year medical student at University of Calgary.
