Yingtian (Hayley) He's first published paper was recently featured in the journal Current Biology. Hayley's study shows that the brainstem is crucial for sensorimotor integration, particularly in innate behaviors, and contains many GABAergic inhibitory neurons. However, their role in these behaviors is not fully understood. This study reveals that inhibitory neurons in the nucleus of the optic tract and dorsal-terminal nuclei (NOT-DTN) modulate the innate eye movement reflex (OKR) by refining the tuning of excitatory neurons. While inhibitory neurons don't directly trigger OKR, they enhance visual selectivity. These inhibitory neurons exhibit broader tuning and sharpen the excitatory neurons' response through sustained synaptic inhibition, highlighting their critical computational role in brainstem sensorimotor circuits.

Congrats, Hayley!
