UTM vs. George Brown Men's Soccer Game Recap - Oct 17th, 2017

Mississauga, ON (Oct. 17, 2017)

Playing for their playoff lives, the UTM Eagle Men's Varsity soccer team needed a complete team effort and almost the full 90 minutes to earn a 3-2 win over the visiting George Brown Huskies.

UTM entered the game sitting 5th in the Central and were one win away from 4th and the last spot for a playoff qualifier game. George Brown sat alone in second place in the Central and could not advance regardless of a win, loss or draw. UTM started the game strong and score in the second minute of the game on a nice header by UTM leading scorer Ebenezer Ikhile.  The teams traded chances in thirst but UTM entered the half with a 1-0 lead.

GBC tied the game at the 51st minute of the second half on a well-placed PK by Shaquille Agard.  UTM then secured the lead for the second time in the game when, Damien Koscielniak found the ball in the front of the net and beat the keeper at the 60th minute.

UTM went into a semi-defensive shell for the next 20 minutes and could not capitalize on the few chances they had.  With nothing to lose, George Brown was not about to let UTM take the win.  With the Huskies pressing, another penalty shot was awarded in the 80th minute as a GBC striker was taken down in the box. GBC's Agard calmly stepped up and converted his second PK of the game to tie the score.

The UTM team was not about to let that result stand and with the fans cheering them on, continued to press for the needed win.  Their hard work and never give up attitude was rewarded In the 86th minute when UTM's John Bayuk scored on a deflection to seal the win for UTM.

The win secures UTM Eagles with at least a chance to get to the OCAA Provinicials.  Before that occurs, the Eagles will have to face the second seed of the West, which has yet to be decided.  The possibility of a three way tie for second in the West exists with Redeemer, St. Clair and Niagara all in the hunt for the second seed. UTM will find out their opponent after the final league games are played on Wednesday, October 18th, 2017.

A win in the playoff qualifier game will send UTM to the Provincial Championships for the second time in their first three years of play in the OCAA.  UTM last qualified in the 2015-16  in their inaugural season and went on to lose in the Consolation Championship Final.  UTM failed to qualify for the play-offs in the 2016-17 season.  UTM is hoping to return to the Provincials, but knows that they must face a tough opponent in the qualifier game.

Coach Titus was pleased with his teams effort.  "TEAMWORK!!" Titus shouted to the players as he walked over to congratulate his team after shaking hands with the GBC coaches.  The Eagles are really finding their stride in the second half of the season and have won 3 of their last 4 games, with wins over the 2nd seeded GBC, 3rd seeded Sheridan and the 6th seeded Conestoga teams.  "The team needed two wins in the last two games to advance and they delivered", said Titus. The UTM players are now playing with confidence and a real trust in one another which keeps them in every game.Pic
