canfitpro Certification Courses

Do you want to expand your fitness knowledge, become a certified personal trainer or instruct group fitness classes? UTM is pleased to be a host site for the canfitpro program. Completing the canfitpro courses listed below can be your first step in becoming a fitness professional to help shape the future of Canadian fitness.

The Personal Trainer Specialist Course (PTS)

This is a comprehensive 25-hour course that will increase your knowledge and confidence to train clients in a private or small group (two to three people) setting. A canfitpro certified PTS is qualified to evaluate, prescribe and monitor individual training programs in a health club, community gym, workplace setting and at home. You will learn the skills needed to train a client with no special health concerns. Choose a session that fits your schedule.

    The Fitness Instructor Specialist Course (FIS)

    This is a comprehensive 22-hour course that will increase your knowledge and confidence to lead a group fitness class to music. A qualified Fitness Instructor Specialist can lead groups in various cardiovascular conditioning formats, muscle strength and endurance training, stretching and relaxation, or a calming cool-down. Choose a session that fits your schedule.

      Please Note: Basic Adult CPR certification is required to become canfitpro certified. Standard First Aid is recommended although not required to complete your certification. CPR is valid up to one year from the date it was originally issued. CPR recertification must be completed annually to renew your certification. Although CPR certification is required to complete your canfitpro certification process, it is not required prior to taking the course or exams.

      PTS/FIS Theory Exam Schedule 2018:

      Sept. 24, Oct. 29, Nov. 26, Dec. 17, 2018

       All exams are 7-10 p.m.

      Please Note: Registration for exams must be done through canfitpro directly at http://www.canfitpro.com, or call 1-800-667-5622 ext. 224.

      UTM can not accept registration for exams. Spaces are limited to 30 registrants per exam, so please register early.

       The Exam Process:

      • PTS & FIS Theory Exams
        Theory Exams will be held  at  the University of Toronto Mississauga, Department of Recreation, Athletics and Wellness in multipurpose room b usually on the last Monday of every month. Both PTS and FIS theory exams will be held on these nights. It is recommended that you write the exam three to four weeks following completion of the course. Although we encourage you to take the actual course, you can challenge the exam without taking the course if you feel you have sufficient experience/education.
      • PTS & FIS Practical Exams
        These are booked following the successful completion of the theory exams. For the PTS, practical exams will be handed out at the theory exam and scheduled one-on-one with your Pro Trainer. For the FIS, practical dates will be announced at the theory exam.
