The 2026 Fitness Bucket List: Fun Movement Ideas to Try at UTM
You look at your schedule and you’ve time-blocked 10 minutes for movement after lecture, but now what? Where do you go on campus that feels welcoming and fun? What kind of movement should you do? As a beginner, these questions might feel daunting when you don’t know where to start.
Making habits stick is easier when they’re tied to places you already live or study, because it lowers barriers like “too far” or “too intimidating”. In this blog, we’ll explore a few beginner-friendly movement spots and programs on the UTM campus, especially during the exciting UTM Moves Month this January.
Why Campus Movement Changes Everything
Minimal effort is the key to adapting a new habit. Imagine this— you have never stepped foot in the gym before, but you decided to get a membership at a fancy gym 30 minutes away, with working out three times a week as your New Year’s resolution. Bestie! The commute alone is a whole workout— it’s no wonder your resolution doesn’t stick.
Now imagine this— instead of paying an extra hundred bucks every month for a membership, you use the resources available on campus. Saving commute time means more convenience (assuming you’re already attending your regular lectures), seeing familiar faces makes it easier to build community, and the well-lit, staffed spaces means safety is less of a concern as a beginner.
Moving where you eat, study, and socialize integrates exercise into your day, increasing the chance of making it a regular routine. Plus, moving in between stressful lectures and study sessions can boost mood and academic performance without extra effort that drains your energy (as if school alone isn’t enough already!). UTM offers a wide variety of movement options— from solo activities to group events, so you’re sure to find something that’s perfect for you.

Solo Movement: Easy Campus Spots
Here are some time-block friendly movement ideas on campus for your “leave me alone” days:
- Trails & Walks
One of the best features of the UTM campus is its location— surrounded by breathtaking scenery and multiple trails nearby for convenient walks. Check out the UTM Nature Trail near Principal’s Road, the Culham Trail near Erindale Park, and the Sawmill Valley Trialacross Mississauga Road. And of course, you can always sign up for UTM Walks if you need some guidance or instruction.
- The RAWC Basics
If not the RAWC then where else? The RAWC has everything you need for movement and exercise— from the indoor running track, to drop-in sports in Gym A/B/C, and even the infamous RAWC stairs can be a perfect spot for a little exercise session.
- Academic Buildings:
I get it— we’re all busy. If you want to be extra efficient and save even more time, consider taking laps in the exact building where your lecture is taking place. Walk across the hallways, use the stairs between floors, or stand to the side and do some stretches.
- Outdoor zones
Spending time outdoors or in nature is one of the best things we can do for our minds and bodies. If the weather permits, spend some time at the South or North field, or even on the paths near residence buildings for more low-key pacing and vibes.
Social Movement: Connect While Moving
Here are some group and UTM Moves Passport-friendly options:
- Sports/ Aquatics
Participate in Drop-in Sports or sign up for Learn to Play with a friend. Whether you’re a fan of badminton, cricket, or pickleball, the RAWC offers a great range of options for you to choose from.
- Group Fitness & Recreation
Find your community by joining one of the Group Fitness classes offered at the RAWC. From yoga to boot camp to indoor cycling, each class is guided by instructors and you’re always welcome to ask questions.
- UTM Moves Activity Zones
Activity Zones are interactive pop-up stations hosted around campus throughout the year—drop by to have fun and learn a new skill or activity. Participate in Activewear Wednesdays to make sure you’re always ready to go. And be sure not to miss our exciting UTM Moves Events either— designed for all fitness levels and backgrounds.
UTM Moves Month might last for only the month of January, but your fitness journey doesn’t have to end with it. Think of this month as your “trial run”— explore different ways of moving on campus that fit your schedule, and make them part of your routine.
For this week, I challenge you to pick up a UTM Moves Passport, choose a movement from this blog, and time-block it into your calendar as a non-negotiable appointment for yourself. Next week, we’ll zoom out and talk about carrying that momentum into the rest of the semester!
