Adult Swim Lessons

We offer five levels of adult swim lessons aimed at providing participants of all abilities a chance to improve their comfort, technique and fitness in the water. The five levels include: Absolute Beginner, Basic Swim, Intermediate Swim, Stroke Mechanics and Introductory Swim Training.

Women’s-Only Swim Classes -  UTM offers adult swim classes are offered for women only. No men are permitted in the pool area and blinds are drawn to ensure privacy. Classes classes run on Monday nights for 10 weeks.

How to Register

Adult Swim Lessons registration is completed online at recreation.utoronto.ca. Please note that no registrations will be completed at the membership services desk. If a class is full, we encourage you to register for the waitlist. If there is sufficient demand,additional programming will be evaluated. For more efficient registration, we strongly encourage you to create your account and add your dependents ahead of registration day.

Online registration is by credit card only (American Express, Mastercard or Visa). Students, staff and faculty can log in using their UTORid and password. All other users can log in using their local account to register. 

Please note that we do not offer make up lessons for missed classes. Refunds are only available before the second class.

In the event of a cancellation, no make-up classes will be offered. A refund for the cancelled class will be processes.

UTM Adult Lesson Level Descriptions

Level

Prerequisites

In This Level

Absolute Beginner – Level 1

No previous swimming required.

Swimmers learn the basics in swimming skills: submerging the face in the water, breathing, buoyancy and propulsion.  Classes are taught in the shallow end.

Basic Swim – Level 2

Successful completion of Absolute Beginner – Level 1 or being able to swim 10 metres on front and back.

Swimmers learn the two basic strokes: front and back crawl. Swimmers are introduced to treading water and deep water skills when they are ready.

 

Intermediate Swim – Level 3

Successful completion of Basic Swim – Level 2 or being able to swim 25 metres on front and back.

Swimmers continue to improve their front and back crawl technique. Swimmers will also be introduced to breast stroke. This course will spend a lot of time in the deep end.

Stroke Mechanics – Level 4

Successful completion of Intermediate Swim – Level 3 or being able to swim 50 - 100 metres front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke.

Swimmers focus on improving stroke technique in front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Dives, kicking drills and other strokes may also be taught.

Introduction to Swim Training – Level 5

Successful completion of Stroke Mechanics – Level 4 or being able to swim front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke comfortably and swimming 400 metres continuously.

Swimmers learn to read, understand and create their own swim sets, learn about and practice pace times, learn the difference between sprints and endurance swimming, and introduce swim equipment into their swims to improve swimming technique and ability.
