The ISUP & RGASC Student Leadership Award recognizes up to two (2) students who have modeled outstanding leadership and initiative in support of peer-led academic programming through the Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy and/or the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre. This award will be presented to individuals who have been influential in working with staff, faculty, and student volunteers to help build and grow programs and initiatives that develop students’ academic skills and enhance their learning experience. The award winners’ contributions will have directly led to significant program improvement and supported the professional development of their peers.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this award, candidates must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:
- Have been registered part-time or full-time as a student at UTM within the past 24 months;
- Have completed at least 10.0 credits at UTM at the time of their nomination;
- Have been in good academic standing when most recently registered as a student at UTM;
- Have demonstrated, within the past 24 months, involvement in, and commitment to, academic peer-led programming;
- Have served in a position of leadership or responsibility in a peer-led program focused on enhancing student academic skills through the Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy and/or the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre.
Selection Criteria
Nominees for this award will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Proficiency in academic skills
- Support of the professional development of student volunteers (e.g., through training and mentoring)
- Effective collaboration with staff and/or faculty on key areas of program development
- Modelling of excellent leadership in the form of decision-making, management, and delegation
Nomination Process
A nomination package must be submitted to Mitchell Pedicelli (mitchell.pedicelli@utoronto.ca) before March 17th of the current academic year to qualify for this award. Please note that a nominator must submit the nomination package, not the eligible nominee. Nominators should use the subject line “Student Leadership Award Nomination” in the email.
The nominator needs to compile the following documents for the nomination package:
- A detailed nomination, maximum 2 pages in length (1000 words), from an instructor or staff member specifying how the nominee meets the criteria for the award,
- A letter of endorsement (maximum 1 page in length) from the nominee’s direct supervisor if the nominator is not the nominee’s direct supervisor.
- A letter of support, no longer than 2 pages (1000 words) from someone else with knowledge of the student’s leadership ability. The ISUP Awards Committee will determine the recipient, based on the criteria outlined, and present the winners at our April 11th Year-End Celebration.
