Course details and application information

Description

This seminar explores confinement, institutions, and incarceration from a broad anthropological perspective. Bioarchaeological, archaeological, and ethnographic research on institutions (e.g., asylums, poorhouses, prisons) will be critically examined. The goal of the course is to provide students with a complex understanding of institutionalization through time and how health vulnerabilities are created and recreated.

Location

The Winter 2026 offering of ANT405H5 will be offered as a Walls to Bridges course and will take place off the UTM campus (see Quercus for details). Learn about the Walls to Bridges program and view a recent feature on Walls to Bridges courses.

Dates

The Winter 2026 offering is scheduled for Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. Due to the unique course delivery environment, students will need to arrive at least half an hour before the start of class and ensure they attend every course session.
