Jan Klakurka (BA 1993)
Director, Corporate Planning and Business Development, Wasteco
Jan Klakurka is the director of corporate planning and business development of the Wasteco Group of Companies, a Toronto-based organziation specializing in waste management and recycling services. At Wasteco, he leads strategy, long-term and operational planning, change management, and corporate development activities.
Previously, Jan was corporate controller and director of process improvement for United Kingdom-based infrastructure and construction services company, Carillion, and was a senior project manager with the strategy consulting practice of Deloitte & Touche LLP, where he lead transformation engagements with Fortune 500 companies globally. While at Deloitte, Klakurka obtained his CMC designation and was the Canadian Association of Management Consultant’s Gold Medalist for Canada in 2003. Klakurka’s professional experience also includes working for both General Motors of Canada and McCarney Greenwood, an entrepreneur-focused accounting firm where he obtained his chartered accountant designation. Klakurka has facilitated workshops on topics ranging from leadership, data gathering and analysis, to process re-design, and organizational structuring, among others. His functional experience, while focused on financial areas, also spans supply chain, operations, project management and change and communications. This deep general management knowledge is founded on a full-time, two-year MBA from Ivey Business School.
Outside of his role in industry, Klakurka was an instructor in the undergraduate Commerce program at the University of Toronto, where he taught fourth-year Introduction to Strategic Management for the five years ended 2009. He also regularly contributes facilitated sessions in Operations Management annually to first-year students at U of T.
As a wine connoisseur, Jan was recently admitted to studies for the prestigious Master of Wine designation, held by only 270 people globally, and regarded as representing the pinnacle of wine knowledge. He currently holds a diploma from London-based Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), the world’s leading wine trade organization and the corresponding AIWS designation. With this background, Jan teaches in the advanced certificate program of the WSET offered in Toronto and has held sessions at the Gourmet Food & Wine Show.
In his down time, Klakurka enjoyes a number of activities with his wife and their two daughters, including a love of travel, skiing, white-water kayaking, scuba diving and wine appreciation.
