Shore Tilbe Irwin and Partners

Shore Tilbe Irwin and Partners has provided architectural and engineering consulting services for clients throughout Canada and the United States since 1945.  Their areas of expertise include architectural design, interior design, feasibility studies, building programming, urban design, graphics and signage, 3-D visualization, and computer-aided design and drafting.

Over the years, the firm has been responsible for a wide range of building types - libraries, community/recreational facilities, college and university buildings, corporate headquarters and office buildings, research laboratories, police service buildings and long term care facilities.  The firm has developed considerable experience in the design and construction of libraries; in fact, since 1970, they have constructed more than forty libraries, 14 of which were for Canadian university clients.  Recent project experience includes the E.J. Pratt Library at Victoria University within the University of Toronto (with Kohn Shnier Architects); the London Central Library renovations (with Malhotra Nicholson Architects); and the Aurora Public Library.  In addition, they currently have three libraries under construction - the Whitby Library, Archives and Civic Square; the Grimsby Public Library and Art Gallery; and the Angus Glen Community Centre and Library for the Town of Markham.

Team Biographies

Stephen Irwin, Partner
As Senior Design Partner, Stephen Irwin has been responsible for the design concept and development of many of Shore Tilbe Irwin and Partners' most illustrious projects. A graduate of Harvard University, Stephen is a recipient of the Prix de Rome (RIBA) and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Stephen began his design career in 1962 in Sweden for Gronwall-Hirsch and worked for one year in London, England for Hugh Casson, Condor and Partners. He returned to Canada in 1965 where he joined Shore and Moffat and has been a partner of the firm since 1971.

A multi-award winning designer, Stephen's portfolio includes numerous significant projects including the Queen's University Bioscience Complex in Kingston, the Mississauga Central Library, the Xerox Research Centre in Mississauga.  In addition to the UTM Library and Academic Learning Centre, Stephen has been involved in the Whitby Library, Archives and Civic Square, the London Central Library, the Aurora Public Library, the Pickering Municipal Library and Civic Square, the L.E. Shore Memorial Library, the National Science Library in Ottawa and the Central Library at York University.Currently, Stephen is the principal in charge of the the new School of Business at Dalhousie University, the Bedford Institute for Oceanography in Bedford, Nova Scotia and the new Science Complex at Saint Mary's University.

D'Arcy Arthurs, Partner
D'Arcy graduated from Carleton University in 1986 with his Bachelor of Architecture (with High Distinction). He joined the firm in 1987 and was appointed associate in 1990. He was made a partner in 1995 and has quickly distinguished himself not only as an excellent design architect, but an astute managing partner as well.D'Arcy's project experience includes several libraries, recreation and community centres including the Aurora Public Library, the Barrie Public Library, the Central Erin Mills Multi-Use Complex, the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre at Sir Sandford Fleming College, the Oakville YMCA and the Angus Glen Community Centre and Library.Currently D'Arcy is the Principal in Charge of the UTM Library and Academic Learning Centre as well as the UTM Athletic Recreation and Wellness Centre.

Frank Park, Associate
Project Architect for HMALC

Frank Park  graduated from Carleton University School of Architecture in 1992. Since joining the firm in 1994, Frank has designed various cultural and recreational institutes.  His primary role in the firm focuses on the design, programming and client liaison.He was the lead designer for notable projects such as CentralErin Mills Multi-
Use Complex which was awarded the 2001 Mississauga Urban Design Award and London Central Library, winner of the 2003 London Urban League Award for Design Excellence. Frank was also the lead designer and project architect for the Owen Sound Vocational Institute and Aurora Public Library.

Currently, Frank is the project architect overseeing the construction phase of Angus Glen Community Centre and Library and the Whitby Public Library and Civic Square.

Andrew Frontini, Associate
Design Architect for HMALC

Andrew Frontini graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture in 1991.  He received the Lieutenant Governor's Medal for his fifth year thesis, which was published in The 1991 RAIC Journal. Upon graduation, Andrew worked for firms in Toronto and Italy, where he also served as an adjunct professor to The University of Waterloo's fourth year Rome studio. Andrew continues to serve as a visiting critic for both U of W and U of T.

Among his design awards are a Canadian Architect Award of Excellence for the Blackwood House and Studio (2000) and an honourable mention in the TKTS New York International Design Competion (1999).

Since joining Shore Tilbe Irwin and Partners as a Senior Designer in 2000, Andrew has lent his design skills to a variety of cultural and institutional projects including the New Library and Academic Research Centre at the University of Toronto, Erindale Campus, The Whitby Public Library and Civic Square, the Grimsby Library and Art Gallery, The Bruce Peninsula National Park Interpretative Centre and The Westmount Branch Library (London, ON).
