Description

An introduction to the work and thought of Dante, with special emphasis on the Inferno and Purgatorio. [52L]
Prerequisite: ITA 200Y

Purpose
The goal of the course is to make accessible to today's student the many dimensions -- political, moral, psychological, religious -- of the masterpiece of Italian literature.
 
 
 

Methodology
 
 

There will be close readings of specific Canti of the Commedia and an orderly illustration of the overall design of the poem. Mechanical and some electronic aids will be used as well as films/video and music. The material will be expounded through lectures, but also through tutorials, class reports and seminars.
 
 
 

Required textbooks

Dante Alighieri. La Divina Commedia.
Other materials will be supplied by the instructor.
