AWAY FROM HOME
For many students/parents this may be the first time that you/your child has moved away from home. There will be many changes and adjustments to be made, both for you and your parents. Here are some tips and ideas to help make a smooth transition to UTM.
1. EMOTIONAL TRANSITION: (PARENTS) Your child may go through many ups and downs, especially in the first few months of school.
- Be an anchor. Parents, let your child know that you are there for them when they need you.
- Be understanding, Listen with an open mind & be supportive.
- Ask questions, BUT not too many! Express interest without appearing interfering.
- Show interest in classes, new friends or activites
- Be a home base. Your child will need comfort, support & to be able to share their accomplishments.
2. ACADEMIC TRANSITION & WORKLOAD: (STUDENTS) UTM is more demanding & competitive than high school. the pressure to succeed will be very high.
- Don't be surprised if there is an initial drop in grades
- visit the Academic Skills Centre
- Set realistic goals and expectations
- How will you respond to a failing grade? Talk about the possibility of low grades with your parents ahead of time.
- If your performance is poor when too much is on your plate, don't be afraid to cut back on activities or take fewer courses each semester.
3. MAINTAINING YOUR RELATIONSHIP: (PARENTS) Some students may call home very frequently, and others may not call at all.
- Clearly discuss expectations about frequency of contact
- Clearly discuss who will pay phone bills
- Anticipate more "bad" news than "good" news, particularly in the first few months
- Don't make surprise, unannounced visits
- Write letters to your child even if they don't write back
4. OTHER IMPORTANT TIPS: (BOTH)
- Make a financial plan and openly discuss payments/spending expectations with your child.
- Discuss the use of alcohol and other lifestyle choices. Let them know where you stand
- Encourage your child to find out about student services available at UTM.
