Classes Without Quizzes: Mortgage fraud and identity theft

Imagine making monthly mortgage payments to the bank for years and then discovering that your property had been stolen, on paper, without your knowledge.

Criminology expert Nathan Innocente, an assistant professor with U of T Mississauga’s Department of Sociology, studies how the very systems meant to support real estate deals can create new opportunities for mortgage fraud and identity theft. Innocente will use recent examples of title fraud to explain this little known yet devestating crime and the efforts to tackle the problem.
