Academic Coaching Program

What is the Academic Coaching Program?

The Academic Coaching Program is an initiative that provides academic support to new-to-UTM students who are first-generation and/or transfer students. While the program is designed to meet the needs of those students, any new student can participate. Through the program, students will:

  • Improve their goal-setting skills by learning to create SMART (Specific, Measurable, Agreed upon, Realistic, Time-based) goals
  • Generate action plans that utilize campus resources aligned with their SMART goals
  • Learn the benefits of maintaining an accountability system to track and assess their progress toward attaining their personalized goals
  • More holistically identify factors that contribute to academic success
  • Feel more connected to their respective student communities (transfer or first gen) and to the broader UTM community

You are considered a first-generation student if your parents (or guardians) did not attend college or university in Canada.

What is the structure of the program?

The program involves five 1-hour academic coaching sessions throughout the second semester, two per month. During these sessions, you, along with a small group of other new to UTM students, will be taught a variety of skills designed to enhance your academic performance throughout your time here at UTM.

You may have received a call from one of our mentors, Chantel, Achtar, or Daniella. They will be your mentor and campus contact. They are successful upper-year students who have been through it all already, so they’ll have plenty of helpful advice for you that you might not be able to get elsewhere. They will be there if you have any questions you have about the UTM campus or resources, need some general help or advice, or just want someone to talk with.

You’ll also be able to schedule 1-on-1 appointments with the Academic Coach, who will be able to work personally with you to help you develop an academic study plan for your time here at UTM, as well as answer any questions you have about building academic skills.

Along with helping to hone your academic skills, the program also works to foster a sense of community and connection with the UTM campus. To this end, there will be several social events held throughout the year: Pub nights, movies, games nights, etc. (not mention a lot of free food!)

The program is completely free, and you don’t have to worry about grades - there are none! Students who successfully complete the program (which involves attending at least 4/5 of the sessions) will be awarded a notation on their Co-Curricular Record, which serves as UofT’s official non-academic transcript. You’ll also be invited to an end of the year recognition event where you’ll be presented with your certificate of completion.
