Subject POSts (Programs of Study) video transcript

"What's your major?" Since you started at UTM, you've probably heard that question over and over and over again. But if you're a first year student, you're not actually majoring in anything just yet. That's because you haven't enrolled in your programs of study, or "Subject POSts" for short. You enrol in Subject POSts if you have completed 4.0 credits by the end of the Fall-Winter Session, or plan to complete 4.0 credits by the end of the Summer Session.

Subject POSts come in three flavours: specialists, majors and minors. You can enrol in anywhere from one to three Subject POSts, but you need to enrol in at least: One specialist, or two majors, or one major and two minors.

You need to enrol in Subject POSts for two reasons: you won't be able to enrol in courses for next year unless you do, and you need to complete them as part of your degree requirements.

There are three types of Subject POSts. Type 1 Subject POSts are open to everyone. Type 2 and 3 Subject POSts have entry requirements, which means that you may need specific courses, GPA, or grades to enrol in them. Type 3 Subject POSts also have limited space, so there's more competition for spots. The Academic Calendar lists each Subject POSt’s type and entry requirements; be sure to check it out.

You can add or drop Type 1 Subject POSts whenever you want, but you must enrol in Type 2 and 3 Subject POSts during a request period. There are two request periods every year: one in the spring and one in the summer. Check the Registration Guide for exact dates. You can apply for most programs in either request period, depending on when you complete 4.0 credits. However, some programs, like Commerce and Management, must be requested during the first period.

To add a Subject POSt, log onto ACORN, select "Enrol & Manage", click "Program enrolment", and use the search field to find the program.

If you're adding a Type 2 or 3 Subject POSt, you'll need to come back to ACORN later to see if you were invited into the program. If you were, you can choose whether or not to accept the invitation. Check the Registration Guide regarding dates for checking requests and deadlines for accepting invitations.

You can apply for as many Subject POSts as you want, but you can only be enrolled in three of them at the same time. If you choose to enrol in three Subject POSts, one of them needs to be a minor.

Keep in mind that your Subject POSts aren't set in stone. If you decide that one of your programs isn't working out for you, you can change it on ACORN. This also means that if you don't yet have the requirements for a Type 2 or 3 Subject POSt that you want to get into, you can enrol in a Type 1 Subject POSt in the meantime so you can enrol in courses. This doesn't mean that you need to take courses in the Type 1 Subject POSt; you just need to be enrolled in it to let you register for courses. If you get into your Type 2 or 3 Subject POSt later, you can drop the Type 1 Subject POSt.

So if you haven't thought about which Subject POSts you want to get into, now's a good time to read through the Academic Calendar and the Registration Guide, and pick out a few that interest you. And as always, if you have any questions, drop by the Office of the Registrar.
