2017 Summer Session Registration Guide

Summer Registration Overview

  • Update your contact information on ACORN (local address, phone number, emergency contact).
  • View available courses on the online timetable.
  • Look-up your enrolment start time on ACORN beginning March 16.
  • Start enrolling in UTM Summer session courses on March 21.
  • Request summer OSAP fee deferrals via ACORN starting  April 17.
  • Pay your fees by April 27 (or defer by May 3).
  • Check that your status on ACORN for the Summer session is "Registered."
  • F and Y classes begin May 8; S classes begin July 4.

Is the Summer Session Right For Me?

Summer courses are an intensive way to earn university credit. A variety of full-credit (Y) courses and half-credit (H) courses are offered, however in a compressed time period. Some students thrive in the condensed course format, while others are significantly challenged by it. When deciding to take a Summer course, consider your learning style, whether you need to work, other commitments outside of school, whether you rely on OSAP, and your academic status.

Are you on Academic Probation after the Fall/Winter session?

Taking courses in the Summer session is considered very risky for students On Academic Probation, and is not recommended. This is due to the compressed format and fast pace of the Summer session, and the fact that your academic status will be assessed again at the end of August.

  • If after Fall/Winter, your CGPA is at least 1.50, your academic status would be In Good Standing, and it is safe to proceed with Summer session.
  • If after Fall/Winter, your CPGA is less than 1.50 and your academic status is assessed as On Academic Probation, meet with an Academic Advisor in the Office of the Registrar if you have questions about the risks involved with taking Summer session courses.  If you are on probation and take Summer session courses, you need to obtain either a CGPA of 1.50 by end of Summer to reach good standing, or a Summer SGPA (Sessional GPA) of 1.70 to continue on probation into the Fall/Winter session.

Complete Academic Status details can be found in the Academic Calendar.

Course Enrolment

  • Use the Academic Calendar and/or Degree Explorer to determine what courses you need for your intended programs of study.
  • Use the UTM online timetable to view Summer session course offerings.
  • Check your course enrolment start time on ACORN beginning March 16.
  • Enrolment in UTM Summer session courses begins March 21 on ACORN.
  • Help using ACORN can be found here.

Summer Session Terms, Course Loads, & Status

  • Y session = May 8 to August 14
  • F term = May 8 to June 19
  • S term = July 4 to August 14

Students can take up to a maximum of 2.0 credits during the entire Summer Session, with a maximum of 1.0 credit in each of the F and S terms.

Students enrolled in 1.5 credits or more in the Summer session are considered full-time. Students enrolled in 1.0 credit or less are considered part-time.  See the Summer OSAP section for Summer OSAP eligibility.

Fee Payments & OSAP

Paying Your Fees

Once you’ve enrolled in courses, you need to either make a minimum tuition fee payment (the minimum required payment to register can be found on your ACORN invoice) or defer your fees (if eligible) to become a registered student. Students who miss payment deadlines will be at risk of being removed from their courses!

  • Minimum Payment to Register Deadline:  April 27
  • Tuition Fee Deferral Deadline:  May 3

If you miss the above deadlines, you will need to submit your proof of payment to the Office of the Registrar online or in person by May 3.

Late Registration

A late fee of $44 plus $5 for each additional weekday will apply to any student who is required to reinstate their registration after being removed from courses for non-payment of fees, or for students who enrol in courses for the first time as of:

  • May 5 for Y and/or F courses
  • June 29 for S courses only

Viewing Your Fees

You will be able to view and print invoices from your Financial Account on ACORN starting April 17. Invoices are not mailed.

Payment Methods

Fees can be paid through your bank (online, telephone, or in-person), or by credit card through ACORN

For detailed instructions on how to make a fee payment, see below (dates to be updated as soon as they are available):

Fee Deferral

Students who are receiving OSAP or an out-of province loan may be eligible for a tuition fee deferral, as their funding would not be available until classes begin. A fee deferral allows eligible students to officially register for their studies without having to make a minimum fee payment until a later date. Fee deferral requests begin on April 17 through ACORN and end May 3.  Learn how to request a fee deferral!

Dropping Courses

If you are considering dropping a course, it is important to be aware of the relevant academic and financial drop deadlines and possible implications.  The Dates & Deadlines section of this guide includes the deadlines to receive full or partial refunds for dropped courses, and the last day to drop a course and have it removed from your academic record.

UTM students who enrol in courses at other U of T divisions (Scarborough or St. George) follow the UTM academic and financial drop dates, with the exception of the LWD deadline.

Students who rely on OSAP or other government aid should speak with a Financial Aid Advisor before dropping a course. In some cases, dropping courses may result in significant changes to your funding and jeopardize future funding eligibility.

After considering your options, if you decide that dropping a course is right for you, do so on ACORN by the relevant deadline.

Cancelling Your Registration for the Summer Session

Should you decide to cancel all of your courses in the Summer Session, ACORN will inform you that this is your last course in the session and ask if you would like to cancel your registration. If you are sure that you do not intend to enrol in other courses in the Summer session, cancel your registration. Cancelling your registration will trigger a full or partial refund of incidental/ancillary fees if you do so within the appropriate time frames, shown in the UTM 2017 Summer Session Refund Schedules, which can be found on the Student Accounts website.

Examinations

  • F term (June) Exam Period:  June 21-23
  • S and Y (August) Exam Period:  August 17-19

For the final exam schedule (when available), information related to deferring a final exam, reporting an exam conflict, or making a religious accommodation request, please visit the Examinations page.

Planning to Graduate in November?

You must meet both your program and degree requirements in order to graduate, which it is your responsibility to check and confirm. Using Degree Explorer, the University of Toronto's degree planning tool, students can review their academic history, and progress towards completion of both degree and program requirements.  If your program requirements show as Incomplete in Degree Explorer, please meet with your Program Advisor in the related academic department.  If you have questions about your degree requirements or graduation in general, please meet with an Academic Advisor in the Office of the Registrar

Students who may be eligible for November 2017 convocation will be given the option to confirm or withdraw their intention to graduate on ACORN between June 20 and September 5.

For more information, visit our Graduation and Convocation page.
