What Would You Like to Learn More About?

What are Programs (Subject POSts)?

(View the transcript for the Subject POSts (Programs of Study) video.)

A program of study, also referred to as a Subject POSt, is a grouping of courses in a specific discipline.

There are three “sizes” of programs, and as part of your degree, you need to pursue at least one of the following minimum program combinations:

  • One Specialist (a large program in one subject)
  • Two Majors (two medium sized programs in different subjects)
  • One Major and Two Minors (a medium sized program and two small programs, all in different subjects)

Good to Know:

  • Program requirements are determined by the related academic department, and can be found in the online Academic Calendar
  • As a UTM student, you can only enrol in programs offered at the UTM campus.
  • The degree you earn is determined by what program(s) you pursue.  See the Academic Calendar for more info!
  • You must be active in a minimum program combination (4.0 credits completed or expected) before course enrolment starts for the next session, or you won’t be able to add courses on ACORN.
  • If you haven’t gotten into your intended program(s) yet, add Type 1 programs temporarily (you don’t have to take courses in this subject, and you can delete the program later), and keep working towards your goal.

When to Request Programs

  • Start selecting programs for the first time once you have earned 4.0 credits (or if you are currently on track to earn at least 4.0 credits by the end of the session).
  • Type 1 programs can be added on ACORN anytime, but Type 2 and 3 program have to be requested on ACORN during one of the two Program Request Periods (see below for dates.
  • If you will have at least 4.0 credits and any necessary program entry requirements completed by the end of the Fall/Winter session (April), make your requests during the Spring Program Request Period.  If you are using the Summer session to complete these, make your requests during the Summer Program Request Period.
  • You can use the Program Request Periods each year, and are free to make changes to your program selections in the future (add, delete, request others, etc.).
  • You can request many programs during each round, but you can only be active in three programs at a time (maximum two Specialists and/or Majors).
  • Visit these pages for detailed information about requesting Commerce and Management programs if you are taking required courses in the Summer session.

Fees for Deregulated Programs

Deregulated Fees

Some programs are deregulated, meaning they have higher fees.  If you are planning to pursue a program that is noted as deregulated in the list above, it is important to be aware of the following information.  Detailed program fee information can be found on the Student Accounts website.

  • You start to pay deregulated fees for your program once you accept the program invitation, and become active in the program.
  • In the Fall/Winter session, students who are in a Commerce Specialist are charged a flat program fee if enrolled in 3.0 credits or more, and a per course fee if enrolled in 2.5 credits or less.
  • In the Fall/Winter session, students who are in all other deregulated programs are charged a flat program fee if enrolled in 4.0 credits or more, and a per course fee if enrolled in 3.5 credits or less.
  • Students in all deregulated programs pay a per course fee in the Summer session.
  • Students with a documented permanent disability who are registered with the AccessAbility Resource Centre may opt to pay the per course fee instead of the program fee (meet with your AccessAbility Advisor for assistance).

Deregulated Fee Back-charges

Students who accept a deregulated program Subject POSt will be back-charged the appropriate deregulated fees for all courses commencing with the session after 4.0 credits were completed.

Example:  Deregulated Program Fee Back-Charges After Program Entry

Susan completes her first 5.0 credits in the Fall/Winter session. She then completes another 1.0 credit in the Summer session. Susan has requested the Management Major, and is invited. She accepts the Management Major that August, but because she completed her fourth credit in the Fall/Winter session, she is now responsible for paying the deregulated tuition fees for every subsequent session regardless of when she enters the deregulated program.

In this case, because she did not enter her the Management Major until after the Summer Session was completed, she will be retroactively charged the higher tuition fee for her summer course.

Deregulated Program Refunds

Fee structures and refund schedules are different for deregulated programs.  Whether you are eligible for a refund depends on the deregulated program you are in, your course load, and when you drop the course(s).

For detailed information, see the UTM Refund Schedules on the Student Accounts website, and/or visit the Office of the Registrar for assistance.

Note that students are not refunded the deregulated fees they have already paid if they choose to withdraw from a deregulated program later on.
