Scholarships
Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)
Changes to the Ontario Graduate Scholarship
Beginning with the 2013-14 academic year, the University of Toronto will be responsible for the awarding of the Ontario Graduate Scholarships held at U of T.
A centralized on-line application form will be available to students via the School of Graduate Studies website by early Nov. 2012; however, graduate units will set their own individual application deadlines (information will be posted once available)
Additional Changes
- students are eligible for a lifetime maximum of six (6) years of government-funded awards (including previous OGS, CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC etc.).
- Students must submit an OGS application to each institution for which they are seeking admission. OGS awards are no longer transferrable from one university to another.
Eligibility to Apply
Applicants must:
- Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person. Foreign students who are studying in Ontario under a temporary resident visa (student study permit) are eligible for a set number of OGS awards.
- Be registered or intend to register in an eligible program on a full time basis. An eligible program is defined as a full-time program of study of two or three terms at the University of Toronto leading to a graduate degree. A full time student is one who is in at least 60% of a full course load (40% for students with a permanent disability) or as defined by their institution.
- At minimum, meet the following OGS academic requirements of an A- (80%) average:
If entering the first or second year of graduate studies at the time of application the student must have an overall average of at least A-, or the equivalent, on the last 20 one-term/semester courses, or the equivalent, completed.
If the student is entering the third year of graduate studies at the time of application the student must have an overall average of at least A-, or the equivalent, on all graduate courses completed.
If master's or doctoral degree marks used for calculating an applicant's grade point average (GPA) are not available (for example, courses were graded on a pass-fail basis), then the university will use the most recently available undergraduate or graduate marks to calculate a student's GPA.
- Be in good standing with the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Applicants who have defaulted on a Canada or Ontario Student Loan, or have failed to make satisfactory repayment on a loan overpayment, are ineligible. Students who have never applied for OSAP are in good standing.

Additionally, if you have already graduated, only apply directly to the department if you graduatedwithin the last 12 months. Anyone who has graduated prior to November of the previous year must apply directly to the agency.
Please give yourself and your referees an adequate amount of time to complete and submit these applications, including the time it takes to order transcripts and have them sent. Preferably, hand in all items together at one time (in this case, transcripts and references should be in a sealed and signed envelope). References cannot be faxed in or statements cut and pasted on reference forms.
Please note that UTM and UTSC graduate students must send in their applications to the St. George campus Undergraduate Office (Sidney Smith Hall, room 4014).
