Professor Bruce Schneider
2006 Faculty Award Recipient
The Faculty Award recognizes excellence in teaching, research and professional endeavours. For more than 35 years, Professor Bruce Schneider has made significant scientific contributions in the fields of human auditory development and information processing by sensory and cognitive systems, both in infants and children, and in older adults.
Professor Schneider's current research, which is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), focuses on how age-related changes in hearing and vision affect an older person's ability to engage in everyday daily activities, such as listening to a conversation, reading a newspaper, or talking on the telephone. He has served on many grant review panels for the Canadian government and lectures frequently on hearing and communication.
Recently, his innovative team approach to research led to the creation of a new centre which he now directs, the Centre for Research on Biological Communication Systems, funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Innovation Trust Fund and the City of Mississauga. He also heads an award-winning CIHR Strategic Training Program on Communication and Social Interaction in Healthy Aging.
