Pathways to UTM: English Language Support

Prepare for Success

At U of T Mississauga, our goal is to deliver exceptional and inspiring educational experiences that are responsive to our students’ needs and career aspirations. We celebrate the diversity of our international student body and aim to support our students in their desire to achieve academic success.
For non-native speakers of English who have met the U of T academic requirement, have already studied in Canada for at least one year in a Canadian curriculum school but who require additional language enhancement, U of T Mississauga is able to offer additional support. This is provided in our Academic Culture and English (ACE@UTM) course, taught by instructors from the renowned University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies.
The skills acquired are designed to lead participants toward greater success in their studies.

The ACE@UTM Advantage

ACE@UTM is specifically designed to target the development of communication, research and study skills. There are two pathways:
1. Summer Program — July and August
Students taking the Summer Program will take 240 hours of English language instruction over 8 weeks to prepare for academic studies in September. Students will also have the option of living in on-campus residences for this program.
2. Fall/Winter Program — September to April
Students taking the Fall/Winter Program will take a reduced UTM academic load and be required to attend 96 hours of English language instruction during the fall and winter terms.
ACE@UTM will enable you to excel in your academic studies by:
  • increasing your familiarity with the academic culture and conventions at UTM
  • improving your academic listening skills
  • enhancing your ability to tackle and critique demanding academic tests
  • expanding your academic vocabulary
  • giving you the opportunity to participate in and gain feedback from stimulating activities designed to develop your strengths in communication and presentation skills
  • providing with the tools needed to produce complex and well-developed pieces of writing
  • guiding you in effective test-taking strategies
