Canadian Perspectives Lecture Series Fall 2009

The Canadian Perspectives public lectures, organized by the Associates of University of Toronto Mississauga and University of Toronto Mississauga, are designed to inform and educate, offer a historical perspective on current issues, and introduce new ideas and technologies that shape lives. Funds generated through this lecture series support scholarships for University of Toronto Mississauga students.

Oct. 15:

Messages From Mars with Dr. Allan Carswell

 

From 2003 to 2009, the Canadian Space Agency supported a team of Canadian engineers and scientists participating in the development and operation of the meterological station MET for studies of the Martian atmosphere for the NASA mission Phoenix.  Dr. Carswell uncovers the first-time unique information and results collegect from the north polar region of Mars.  Dr. Carswell is an internationally recognized leader in the field of lidar (laser radar) applications and founder of Optech Incorporated.  He obtained his BASc and PhD from U of T.

Oct. 22:

Inside the Actor's Studio with Ken Gass

 

As a recognized Canadian writer and director, Ken Gass has established his presence as an essential fixture in the Toronto theatre scene.  Gass shares his lifelong experiences founding the Factory Theatre Lab in the 1970s, organizing Toronto's Festival of Underground Theatre, establishing the Canadian Rep Theatre and resuming the position of Artistic Director at Factory Theatre to rescue it from the brink of bankruptcy.  Gass is a professor at U of T.  His plays include: Hurray for Johnny Canuck (Factory, 1974), The Boy Bishop (Factory, 1977) and Amazon Dream (Canadian Rep, 1994).

The Healthy Immigrant Effect with Kathi Wilson

 

When Professor Kathi Wilson joined U of T Mississauga's geography department, she aimed to be involved in community-based research that would benefit the local area.  Now, Wilson showcases her recently published study revealing the real reasons behind the decline of health status in Canadian immigrants in the Greater Toronto Area.

Nov. 5:

Living Well with Type 2 Diabetes with Marjorie Hollands 

 

Marjorie Hollands brings her 25 years of experience as a dietitian, lecturer and diabetes educator to the table with advice on meal planning, preventing and managing type 2 diabetes.  Hollands received her MSc in nutrition from U of T in 1986.  Twenty years ago, she founded the Tri-Hospital Diabetes Education Centre and has since served as chief dietitian and diabetes educator.  Since retirement she has co-authored six books in the Choice Menu series.

Nov. 12:

War, Morality, Judgement: The Air War in the Shadow of Nov. 11 with Randall Hansen

 

The Allies dropped two million tons of bombs on Germany during World War II, killing almost 600,000 people.  To this day, the area bombing of German cities - above all of Dresden - remains bitterly contested (in the most extreme version, it has been called a war crime).  Hansen will reflect on the effects of the Allied air war, its morality, and its place in Rememberance Day commemorations.  Randall Hansen is an associate professor of political science and holds a Canada Research Chair at the University of Toronto.  He is also the author of Fire and Fury: the Allied Bombing of Germany.
