genONE
Introduction
The genONE program at the University of Toronto Mississauga, (UTM) offers first-year, first generation students support transitioning into university. Students attend social and academic programming led by upper year students to enhance their academic success. In these program specific communities, students engage in activities that contribute to increased grade point averages and better preparation for students’ academic careers at UTM.
Peer Academic Leaders (PALs)
Peer Academic Leaders (PALs) lead each genONE community. PALs are upper year, first generation students in a similar program as the first year participants. Each PAL is able to share their insight and experience of being a first generation student studying the various programs offered at UTM.
The Program
· Weekly Seminars: Peer facilitated seminars designed to help students navigate the University of Toronto and its resources, develop personal, social & academic skills, and get connected to the campus community;
· Facilitated Study Sessions: Peer assisted group study sessions provided at key points in the academic year, where students learn together and develop effective academic skills to succeed in their courses;
· Capstone Projects: In the second semester, students connect with faculty or industry professionals to create applied discipline specific academic learning projects;
· Peer & Community Mentoring: Supportive peer networks created to help students meet others with similar interests, find study partners and engage with successful upper year students.
